The AGE Filaments™ Facelift

In recent years, different facelift techniques using threads have become increasingly popular. Patients are seeking the simplest and least invasive cosmetic procedures, not only for the purpose of rejuvenation, but also in order to maintain their youthful appearance and prevent the development of signs of ageing.

History

The first phenomenon in the ageing process of the face is ptosis (sagging), related to diminished support against gravity. Although ptosis has traditionally been treated by facelift, attempts to improve the signs of ageing without incisions were made over five decades ago.

In 1956, Buttkewitz reported his method of elevating tissue by means of subcutaneously applied nylon thread.
In 1999, Moscow cosmetic surgeon, Dr M Sulamanidze described a technique of lifting soft tissue of the face with barbed or notched threads, made from polypropylene, he called APTOS sutures (Anti-PTOSIS)

Dr Zurek thoroughly explored this concept, and as APTOS threads were not yet approved in Australia, he developed custom made, self anchoring, bi-directional (barbed) threads using polypropylene (an approved suture material commonly used for many years in surgery). He trade marked the AGE Filaments™ (Anti-Gravity Elevation) filaments in 2002.

How do they work?

AGE Filaments™ are implanted underneath the skin via small punctures using a special long needle.
The introducing needle is then withdrawn, leaving the thread in the soft tissues. The barbs along the length of the thread anchor themselves achieving elevation and support.
The ends of the threads are cut and are retracted into the skin so they are not seen or felt on the skins surface.
The bodies reaction to the AGE Filament™ is to form an envelope of natural tissue around the thread (fibrosis), resulting in added firmness and volume. The filaments become totally integrated in time (4-6 weeks).

Is it for me?

As the ageing process begins, the mid face begins to deflate due to the loss of natural volume, this in turn leads to the jowl area becoming ptotic (sagging) and the definition of the jaw line is not so apparent. Consequently this is the most requested area for improvement.
The soft tissue of the jowl and mid face, can be elevated and supported with the AGE Filaments™, improving the overall appearance. They remain in the face the permanently, offering continued support and an increase in the firmness.
However, if the face is too thin, a good coverage of the threads cannot be achieved and you would be better to have a look at Fat Transfer as a way of adding volume and achieving a lift.
If the skin on your face is extremely loose you may be wiser to consider the SAFE procedure, as the excess skin will need to be addressed.

The Procedure

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic and light oral sedation. One area takes approx. 20 minutes to complete.
You will have mild swelling expected to last only 2-3 days and bruising is minimal if at all.
You may apply ice packs to the treated area at home and Panadol can be taken for any discomfort the first day.
Most people return to work after 2-3 days.
Antibiotics will be given for a few days to reduce the risk of infection.
Heavy chewing, cleaning teeth and some facial expressions eg: laughing, will be tender for 7-14 days.
