TUMESCENT LIPOSCULPTURE FAQs

WHAT IS TUMESCENT LIPOSCULPTURE?

Tumescent liposculpture is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgical procedures. Tumescent liposculpture is the advanced technique of permanently removing excess fat deposits in areas that are resistant to diet and exercise. It is called tumescent (which means "to swell") because the surgeon fills and swells the fatty areas to be removed with large volumes of special solution before the procedure. This solution completely numbs the area due to the effect of local anaesthetic, therefore general anaesthesia or heavy intravenous sedation is not required. At the same time a substance called adrenalin constricts the blood vessels, reducing bleeding to negligible amounts. Fatty deposits are then removed using small straw-like tubes called cannulas connected to a suction apparatus or syringe. It is called liposculpture because the cosmetic surgeon is able to artistically sculpt the body into a new shape using delicate instruments.

Besides the obvious increased safety of tumescent liposculpture performed totally under local anaesthesia there are other significant benefits. The patient can cooperate with the surgeon by changing position, including standing up, so the effect of gravity can be observed during the liposculpting to optimise the results.

During sculpting of the abdomen and buttocks, the patient can cooperate by contracting muscles. Fat deposits are more clearly visible when certain muscles in this area are contracted.

IS IT PAINFUL?

No. There is minimal, if any, discomfort during administration of the anaesthetic. Patients usually listen to music or talk during this time. The procedure itself is basically painless, and many patients compare it to a deep massage. The anaesthetic effect usually lasts for about 24 hours, after which the patient may experience some soreness lasting from 1 to 2 weeks.

WHAT IS THE WORST PART OF THE TUMESCENT LIPOSCULPTURE PROCEDURE?

The leakage of slightly bloodstained anaesthetic fluid from the tiny incisions, lasting for about 2-3 days. The refinement of not closing these small incisions accelerates the healing process and reduces bruising.

HOW SAFE IS TUMESCENT LIPOSCULPTURE?

Tumescent Liposculpture is the safest method of liposuction available. Large studies involving over 15,000 patients reported no admissions to hospital for complications, and there were no blood transfusions required. Reported complications were minor and infrequent.

WHO IS SUITABLE FOR TUMESCENT LIPOSCULPTURE?

The ideal candidate for liposculpture is a person who is in good health, exercises regularly, maintains good eating habits and is within 10kg of his or her ideal body weight. It is the most effective method for removing localised fat deposits in body areas which will not improve with diet and exercise. It is not a treatment for generalised obesity. The most common areas of localised body fat in women include the lower abdomen, upper inner and outer thighs, hips, waist, buttocks, inner knees, arms and neck. The common problem areas for men include the abdomen, waist and neck. Tumescent Liposculpture allows safe and effective correction of these problem areas in patients of almost any age, from 16 to 80 years.

HOW MANY DAYS OF WORK WILL I MISS?

Most patients return to work in 2 to 4 days.

HOW LONG WILL IT BE BEFORE I SEE A NOTICEABLE IMPROVEMENT?

Some patients observe improvement within 4 weeks. The final result will not be apparent for 6 months.

IF I GAIN WEIGHT FOLLOWING TUMESCENT LIPOSCULPTURE WILL I GAIN IT IN THE AREA TREATED?

No. The fat cells are permanently removed during tumescent liposculpture, therefore the treated area can never become as large as it would have been if the procedure had not been performed.

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?

It depends on the area being treated, Tumescent liposculpture is usually performed in our fully equipped procedure room. It is less expensive than liposuction under general anaesthesia in a hospital. As a general indication, prices start at $2,000 for a small procedure, with the price for a major area starting at $4,000. Payment in full is required before the procedure.
